Veld Architects: The importance of professional SAIA architectural governance

Veld Architects: The importance of professional SAIA architectural governance

In sunny South Africa, where history and modernity coexist, architecture plays a vital role in shaping and reshaping the built environment. Whether it’s designing innovative structures in bustling urban centres or preserving the rich architectural heritage of the country, architects have a significant role to play.

But this role doesn’t start and end with designing. Behind the scenes, professional architects, like Veld Architects, must adhere to high standards of quality, safety, and sustainability. This translates into specific principles and regulations that need to be followed to the letter, and yes of course, a whole lot of documentation.

Think of architects as the composers as well as the conductors of a musical performance. It is our work to not only design a modern, sustainable home, but to also oversee that the entire project turns out exactly as planned.

The Design Stages

We follow the South African Institute of Architects’ (SAIA) design stages. Here is a brief outline of what each stage entails.

SAIA architectural governance Stage 1

Stage 1: Inception

This initial stage involves defining the project’s purpose, objectives, and feasibility. It’s crucial for our clients to communicate their vision and goals clearly to us to ensure a successful project outcome.

Stage 2: Concept and Viability

Stage 2: Concept and Viability

During this stage we develop conceptual designs that align with the project’s goals, budget, and timeline. This stage allows clients to review and approve the design concept before further development.

Stage 3: Design Development

Stage 3: Design Development

We create detailed architectural plans and specifications, considering factors such as aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. We encourage our clients to participate in the design decisions to ensure that the project reflects their vision. In Stage 3, Veld Architects extends an exciting opportunity to our clients – the chance to immerse themselves in their design through Virtual Reality. With the use of our advanced VR headset, clients can step into a fully-realized 3D representation of their new project, gaining a comprehensive understanding of its spatial layout and design elements. This immersive experience allows for a deeper connection with the project before it comes to fruition.

Stage 4: Documentation and Procurement

Stage 4: Documentation and Procurement

In Stage 4.1, we meticulously draft a set of drawings for submission to the council or local authorities. We co-ordinate technical documentation with other consultants, and once all the requirements are adhered to we obtain the client’s authority and submit documents for building approval.

In stage 4.2, comprehensive construction documents are prepared, which includes blueprints, specifications, and cost estimates. It is vital that clients be aware of the project’s cost implications and have a clear understanding of the procurement process.

Stage 5: Construction

Stage 5: Construction

At last! The construction phase begins, and we oversee the project, ensuring that it adheres to the approved plans and specifications. We take it on us to keep our clients informed about the progress and any potential deviations from the initial plan.

Stage 6: Handover and Closeout

Stage 6: Handover and Closeout

Once construction is completed, the project is handed over to our client. A thorough inspection and quality assessment is conducted to ensure that the final product meets our client’s expectations.

At Veld Architects, we are completely transparent. We want our clients to understand the stages of design because we believe it enhances communication, contributes greatly towards budget control and boosts quality assurance throughout a project.

Yes, a lot of the process seems less arty and more rigid, but rest assured we love and have an inclination for every stage of the process.
