The Alchemy of the Architectural Design Process

The Alchemy of the Architectural Design Process

At its core, the role of an architect is to design a building that is highly functional and visually striking. It sounds straight-forward enough, right? However, as one of our recent articles entitled “The Importance of Professional SAIA Architectural Governance” shows, the physical design part is just one stage of the greater responsibility of an architect.

Naturally, as artists-at-heart, the design aspect is incredibly exciting. Yet even this process is everything but one dimensional. When it comes to the art of the architectural design process, these are the things we consider before putting pen to paper.

Architectural trends and technological advancements

Trends come and go, so why should they influence an architect? They matter because trends are formed based on what clients want. Trends are also formed based on advancements in construction. If there is a new, improved and trending way to build, an architect should know about it.

Globally, there are a lot of people that have grown tired of mass-produced and poor-quality things. There is also a shift towards living more mindfully, and many are concerned about the health of the planet. That’s why eco-conscious, inclusive, nature-centred and wellness trends are visible across all industries.

As a result, we can look forward to more of following trends in architecture:

  • Biophilic Design – This design brings nature and natural elements to buildings through green roofs and walls etc. to help reconnect humans with nature.
  • Technology in Design – Technology is adding convenience to our everyday lives and in the home even more so. Imagine being able to switch on specific lights remotely…
  • Sustainable Design – Net Zero homes that look to solar, passive cooling, water harvesting etc. to lower a building’s carbon footprint and make a building eco-friendlier is very trending now.
  • Outdoor Living – People want to be closer to nature and buildings need to help accommodate this through rooftop gardens, terraces, outdoor kitchens, and other indoor-outdoor spaces.
  • Cocooning Architecture – This refers to architecture that focuses on creating safe spaces where people can feel “nurtured” and cosy, much like the concept of Hygge.

Physical, geographical, and cultural context of the site

The physical, geographical, and cultural context of the site

Where do we draw the most of our inspiration from?

From the site itself. The surrounding landscape, the natural features like vegetation, soil, water, and the sun and how it affects shadows.

We spend a lot of time on site. Listening. Feeling. Smelling. Watching. Tasting. We are open to every sensory aspect of the immediate and larger landscape.

And at the end of the day all the above influence the form, rhythm, light, and air flow of the design.

Client or end-users’ vision

The client or end-users’ vision

People don’t choose Veld Architects because we blindly follow every one of their requests. They choose us because we value the intended use of the space.

We ask the right questions, figure out what the occupants really want, and establish what would make them happy, and unhappy.

We prioritise flow and layout, sustainability, and cultural purpose.

Why do we do all of this? Because in doing so we create more than just a building. We create a place where occupants can flourish.

Naturally, budget, timelines and maintenance requirements are also important, and we factor these in too.

Collaboration to complement the project

 Collaboration to complement the project

At Veld Architects we believe that collaboration is the pièce de résistance of every project. And based on the client brief and everything we’ve learned about the prospect of a design up to this point is only complete once we decide who we will bring on board to complement the building.

When we collaborate with artists and artisans for example, the analytical and creative aspects of design come together, resulting in a space that can really resonate with people.

Collaboration instils the spirit of place in a building. Once we know who we are collaborating with and have spent some time consulting with these individuals, the muse takes over in full force. And we don’t think she every really leaves…

Spoiler alert – the Veld logo will change soon.

And because design is such a process for us, we couldn’t help but apply this same alchemy to the rebrand as well.

The wonderfully talented Sunshinegun made this possible for us. We look forward to sharing this process with you over the coming months.
