House over the hills

Architectural Overview

This project signifies some of Veld Architects’ first explorations into residential architecture  through the introduction of the use of courtyards, the effect of light as well as the interpretation of the special transition between inside and outside spaces.

Perfectly situated on the northern slope of the Highveld eco-estate Carlswald, this project was conceived as a response to the specific environment and embraces the unique South African lifestyle.

The design is arranged around a set of courtyards to enable transition from public to private spaces. The sequential build of spaces around these courtyards are implicit to the African spatial model. The central living area is open plan with more private wings closed off with pocket doors that can be easily closed to allow for privacy when entertaining. Single storey development within tight constraints of the site were explored whilst allowing the inhabitants access to pockets of special courtyards that offers an opportunity to connect with nature and provide privacy.
