A heavy responsibility rests on the shoulders of architects in South Africa that want to design for change. Positive change in architecture requires that we lead with intentional and redemptive purpose. This means we need to be very analytical, yet exceptionally resourceful at the same time. We need to listen intently to the needs and wants of our client, really absorb the surrounding landscape, context and changing climate, all while prioritising functionality, culture and sustainability.
Where do aesthetics fit into all of this? Well, when designing this way, the beauty of the design becomes an organic byproduct.
To help set us on the right course to achieving our purpose, we at Veld Architects govern ourselves with a set of six core values. In the second part of this blog series, we cover our three remaining values of designing with Grit, for Unity and with a Pioneering spirit at heart.

Core Value #4: Designing with grit
grit
/ɡrɪt/
(noun)
“courage and resolve; strength of character.”
Architecture is a journey. There are many ups and downs, challenges, and potential crises between all the pleasures and excitement. Grit in design means resilience – standing by our clients and guiding them from initial vision through to the completion. This value also refers to the longevity of the building itself and its ability to stand the physical and emotional demands of time – because things change.
Grit keeps us grounded and determined, ensuring each project is executed to the highest standard.
At Veld Architects, we practice grit by:
- Maintaining open and honest communication with clients throughout the design process.
- Persisting through design and construction challenges with creative solutions.
- Offering continuous support and guidance, ensuring a seamless experience.
- Working to create buildings that are durable, resilient, and adaptable to future needs.
Core Value #5: Designing for unity
unity
/ˈjuːnɪti/
*(noun)*
“the state of being united or joined as a whole.”
The biggest problem in the world today is a lack of unity. That is why we find it essential to bring this vital value into the centre of what we are and what we do. To us, architecture is successful when it can connect people to spaces and reconnect them with nature. Unity in design requires balance and harmony of all the elements that make up the design including form, colour, void, light, and texture.
This can only be achieved if we all – client, architect, partner, artisan, engineer, builder and landscaper – work together.
Unity to us means:
- Collaboration with clients to understand their unique hopes and dreams.
- Working together with all parties involved in a respectful manner to ensure a successful outcome.
- Commitment to designing spaces that cultivate a sense of place.
- Efforts to incorporate local materials, traditions, and landscapes into each project.
- Focus on creating environments where people feel welcomed, included, and inspired.

Core Value #6: Designing with a pioneering spirit
pioneer
/ˌpaɪəˈnɪə/
(noun)
“a person who is among the first to explore or develop new areas.”
Trends come and go because they aren’t sustainable. Architects need to create their own purpose and lead the way – even if no one else is doing it or if it isn’t popular. Architecture is about pushing boundaries and exploring new ideas that can help change the built environment for the better.
At Veld Architects, we see ourselves as pioneers. While respectful thereof, we aren’t afraid to challenge traditional conventions. We believe in bringing fresh, transformative designs to life.
Our pioneering spirit shines through by:
- Embracing cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices in our designs.
- Constantly seeking innovative solutions to enhance functionality and aesthetics.
- Taking risks to achieve the outcomes that will redefine the way people think about space.
- Designing buildings that not only serve today’s needs but also anticipate future possibilities.
